This week, I asked Jennifer Lin some fun questions about herself. Jennifer is a Research Assistant and she completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Waterloo. She has a strong background in biochemistry and enzymology. Keep reading to learn more about Jennifer and her kittens!
What is your role at Healthy Hydroponics and what do you do?
I’m a Research Assistant at Healthy Hydroponics. My primary responsibility is to provide support in the laboratory and research activities which take place in our lab. Such activities involve the use of various molecular biology and microbiology techniques to sample, test, and analyze results for clients.
What is your schooling in and what made you pursue that field?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Waterloo. My fascination with life sciences began in my teen years when I was slowly realizing how little I knew about the different life forms around me. This curiosity blossomed once I entered university as I began to learn more about microbes.
What is your expertise?
I began my research journey in a research lab specializing in biochemistry, enzyme function and structure at the University of Waterloo. During my time there, my research was largely focused on the screening of various prospective inhibitors against Mpro, the main protease of SARS-CoV-2. This included the usage of technical skills such as differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), crystallography, and protein purification. Currently, I am intrigued by the operations of other types of research outside of biochemistry and am looking to explore other areas of research pertaining to microbes and nucleic acids.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
One thing about science and research is that there is always, always more to learn. I have always been curious about working with DNA and it is incredibly refreshing for me to be in a lab setting that’s largely focused on molecular biology and microbiology applications. Another aspect I enjoy about my job is the friendly, supportive community here at Healthy Hydroponics. Being comfortable with the people I work with, has made my work all the more enjoyable.
What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I prioritize spending time with myself and my loved ones. Although I love binging my favourite Asian dramas during my free time, I intentionally make time in my schedule to incorporate activities that are slow and easeful. These activities include yoga, nature walks, reading, and cuddling with my kitties.
Do you have any pets?
Yes! I have two loving, spunky kittens that have boundless energy and affection (lucky me—but not as much for my hair).
What was the last thing you were really excited about?
Adopting my two cats!
Are you reading any books currently?
